Salt binds to metal surfaces and forms a thin corrosive film, and once moisture in the air activates it, rust and deterioration set in far faster than they would inland.


Your outdoor condenser unit takes the brunt of it. Salt accelerates oxidation on the copper and aluminum coils that make up most AC systems, and over time it also corrodes fasteners, panels, brackets, and the housing itself.   • Book a professional tune-up twice a year. A trained technician can clean deep into the coil, inspect electrical connections for early corrosion, check refrigerant levels, and catch pitting or rust before it becomes a leak.


  • Ask about coastal-grade coatings. Some coils are available with protective coatings or e-coating specifically designed to resist salt exposure — worth discussing if you're due for a replacement anyway.


  • Keep vegetation and debris clear of the unit. Good airflow around the condenser reduces trapped moisture, which is what activates salt into an actively corrosive state.

None of these steps are complicated, but consistency is what actually protects your investment. A unit that gets rinsed every few weeks and professionally serviced twice a year can comfortably outlast one that's left to fend for itself against the salt air — often by several years.
